GST - politics or business - who won?
India is being looked by the world as a country that has huge potential to consistently grow among the developing nations. What makes us so special? Our economy has been able to sustain the global slowdowns effectively. Our foundation has been strong enough to see through the sneeze of the USA or the fire of the Chinese dragon. Talented younger population, optimistic approach along with keen to grow making us one of the top rated developing nations.
The World Bank report ranked India as the 130th nation among the ease of doing business in 2016. Yes we have improved from our previous position of 134th rank. Aren't we pleased to see a small jump? Why would not we be? Lets celebrate over it.
Let us look at where we improved upon in the last one year - starting a new business we jumped by about 9 ranks, getting electricity jumped by 29 ranks (yes you read it right - 29) and few others. Now let us look at the main point we slipped by one rank when it comes to the paying taxes. We were ranked 156 in 2015 for ease of paying taxes and now we are 157. Any IT guy would say this would be the top priority task among the product backlog items for the next sprint for the Government to act upon. (by the way just trying to show off my Scrum knowledge here :)) I believe you understood where am leading you to - GST.
Goods and Services Tax was proposed way back in 2000 by Vajpayee government and later announced for implementation by the then Finance Minister Chidambaram during the Congress regime. Yes we missed implementing it 3 times....what do you want to call this? Lethargy, improper co-ordination or leg pulling between governments for taking credits for its implementation. Whatever the cause might be the end sufferer has been the Indian voter, who has always been made to look like a fool.
Parliament sessions are being concluding without results. Now today our Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has given a statement that a delayed GST is better than flawless one. Have we ever been able to implement a flawless system at the first go? Why not role it out and see what can be corrected to make it flawless?
Why is the Indian middleman suffering due to the cold war happening between two political parties? We all know democracy has rights to oppose fairly, but shouldn't we have a end for this? My suggestion is to work with deadlines for implementing the bills. What do you think?
Let me pray for more selfless people to join our political system and make a difference to this nation. Its high time we deliver.
