Common Sense :-)

Last weekend me and my mom were discussing on few things and the question of the common sense came in. She mentioned that today's education is ruining the common sense of whatever is left in human beings. I couldn't agree with her more. Doesn't education teach you how to have more presence of mind? Building your concentration should be the essence of education rather than stuffing your memory. Lest we forget that our current Indian education system is about memory load (or rather overload) :-).        I took up a common sense test online to see where to I stand. Believe me, I took this to evaluate myself. Results were amazing...I am creative and analytical. Being a virgo, I tend to be analytical but 'creative' that came in as a surprise. You never know the hidden talents correct :-). Okay...let me stop admiring myself too much.         Let me give you the actual common sense advice....the same questions asked in anot...

"Law Abiding Citizen"

A hollywood movie that was released in 2009 is too good to be missed if you like crime thrillers. Gerard Butler is at his best playing the character of Clyde Shelton with Jamie Foxx in supporting role. In my opinion, Jamie was in the supporting role while the lead character was played by Gerard. Yeah many would not agree to the path Clyde Shelton took in order to teach a lesson, but isn't it fair enough on his part to take justice in his hands when the whole system fails.      A simple story of a man who loves his family more than anything in this world is brought down to his knees when the judiciary system does not support the truth. What would you have done in this case? Look at it from Indian context, am sure we see so many such cases on a day to day basis where in justice is not done. Is Gandhigiri an answer to this? Mahatma Gandhi did what he had to do during his times but am not saying violence and destruction is an answer to injustice as well....

Education Costs...

If you have read my previous blogs, I talk about getting bored too often which eventually leads to fulfilling some craving in me. Today I felt the same and started doing research on what should I do next academically, now that I have an executive post graduate diploma in management or EPGDM in short.      Geographically now that I am in Hyderabad, I thought of looking for the prestigious ISB (Indian School of Business). A PGP-Pro for working professionals costs around 25 lakhs in INR and imagine this - my experience in terms of years has overshooted the minimum eligibility criteria and had to look for next best option - PGP-Max. A program for executives in ISB, PGP-Max, would not cost less than 35 lakh in INR. Thats a wow!!! Hmmm...interesting to know that knowledge is weighted with your experience level.    On the other side, I see so many school, college drop outs who are super successful in life. Take for example Sachin Tendulkar, Bill ...

Boredom or Intelligence!!!

Today's world is filled with lots of exciting things. We have too many choices in every field - the various brands to choose for clothes, mobiles to the variety of channels to watch on the TV. Sometimes I feel are we lost in today's choices that we have. Of course this has led to new businesses for few, like bankbazaar.com, policybazaar.com helping you to choose the best from the rest.         Are we overloaded with choices? Have we reached a limit where our choices will define who we are? Have these choices caused us confusion or making us bored? Is there an intelligent way to make a decision? Questioning something shows intelligence they say.         In life you decide every second on what you want to do next. Let it be as simple as which movie to go for on a weekend with your wife or girlfriend. What makes us decide better? A little bit of pre-conceived notion on the topic or thing may be. For others it could be th...

The Greatest Game Ever Played!!!

"The Greatest Game Ever Played" a movie on golf is probably one of my all time favorite movies. It is based on a true story of Francis Ouimet,an American who won the 1913 US open. An amateur golfer who went on to win the championship against British players named Harry Vardon and Ted Ray. It was a matter of pride for Americans who eventually retained their cup.    Movie is quite inspiring as Francis was a common peasant's son and went on to become a champion against his own role model(Harry Vardon). The best character of the movie which I found was the caddy Eddie who was hardly 10 years. His enthusiasm, charisma, maturity for a 10 year old is commendable.      It all starts when Francis's parents have bought a house on the edge of the 17th hole of 'The Country Club' in Brookline, Massachusetts. All his young life Francis was a caddy and then went on to become the most admired Golfer of his time.      Shia LaBeouf has done an outs...

Define the purpose!!

Philosophically speaking we are here in this world to understand the true purpose of our birth and try to achieve it. If you talk to a Guru, he would say the higher purpose is to attain Nirvana . If you talk to a stock broker, he might say his higher purpose is to own a stock exchange. For a farmer, a huge fertile land. What is your purpose in this life?     Reaching for the stars or just being a happy person or simply helping the poor/needy - whatever you aim for, you can get it. I forgot to add if you believe in it. Belief is the key word.     Let me tell you a big secret. Whatever you aim for in life is achieved faster, when you do it not for yourself but for others. Selflessness if the key here. If you imagine that you are doing this for more people than yourself, your energy would amplify.     My wife has a simple aim in life - to be happy. Isn't that by itself such a nice thing? When she is happy she makes her environment happy...

Real challenge in IT Support!

For a change I wanted to write on something related to work. For those who don't know, I work in Information Technology and in a technical support role. Let me convey this, I love my job. Yes I have always enjoyed my job. It feels great to even say this.     With 13 years of experience in my field of work, I see major hiccups in this field is not the expertise in your work but simple co-ordination among the team members.  A task however simple it is, when done well leads to so much of satisfaction to us. Don't you agree? Imagine all those pieces of work giving satisfaction to individuals but as a team unable to add those pieces to make it a frame. That is the challenge I see.     I am sure you would have played the game of Dumb Charades. It involves word guessing by a team when an individual is showcasing it thru actions (lip sealed!!) and strictly no talking. I have always felt that this game is an icebreaker  for an newbie and is an...

Bharatha or India - Which one do you prefer?

Bharatha the name derived by the emperor Bharata or the modernized version 'India' or the Persian term 'Hindustan' or land of Hindus - does it matter what name we call our nation?     What is in a name? It is just an identity to differentiate one over the other. By the way let me not get in to the marketing concept of branding for now, which am sure would need a name to be branded for popularity. Let me get to the real topic I want to put it in front of you for discussion in this blog.     India or Bharatha is on the verge of a revolution. Some may say it is an economical revolution, some an ethical revolution, some might want to call it a cultural revolution. I would say it is a mixture of all.    The open economy in 1991 led to change in Information Technological sector. This boom had its impact on almost every other sector be it real estate, infrastructure, BFSI or retail for that matter.       Next big revolut...

Starting it Up - a new initiative!!

Last week one of my team member wanted to know what it takes to be an enterpreneur in today's world. Obviously he was looking for inputs from everyone around him. Speaking like an expert (sometimes I do that) I gave him a piece or two of my gyan.  A graduation from an IIT or PG from a IIM (or ISB for that matter)would be a sure way of getting money out of the venture capitalist pocket. At times I wonder if that is the only way to get the finance out to fund your company unless you have it inherited? Sounds interesting when you can ready to put in all the passion at work, ready for the challenge to face but a prestigious degree stopping you to open up. Is this really a case? Something to think over.  The answer to this might be not to start a company but to sustain it over long years you would need a lot of financing. Eventually it would boil down to looking for a VC or an angel investor who can shell out his money. Putting on a hat of a VC, I researched on what would he l...
