Reformations needed!

This blog is inspired by the article in economic times below on the need for Indian IT firms to reshape its technology and business model.
Yes we in IT are undergoing the change again. We see the change coming across every 10 years...the change could be the technology, process or even the business model. Lets look at the three decades since 1991 when Indian economy opened up.
Mainframes were the most happening thing then...we then gradually moved to windows based systems like DOS and then GUI based windows NT. A major step taken towards the IT world we see today. The industry just boomed with no stoppage with Y2K adding the spice needed to keep up the growing curve. Just when we thought we are unstoppable the 2001 recession made us think are we in the right direction? Obvious downsides have helped the IT industry shape up better.
We went from playing a dos based games like digger, Mario to more advanced version of strategic ones like  age of empires, need for speed etc. Don't we love the pace at which we moved? All in all we were hit by another recession in 2008 and Indian IT which was booming till then had to re look in terms of cost optimization. It is during this period we (Indian IT) evolved stronger by keeping up to the pace needed. Fortunately India was well placed to handle the global economic crisis. We grew at a snail pace till 2016. Be it on the technical front using cloud based technologies or analytics or on the process model of agile, India was able to catch up faster.
Switch over to 2017-18, the IT world is now looking at advanced technologies like big data, artificial intelligence, robotics. Suddenly the world thinks India is yet to catch up. Agreed we do not have the edge in these fields as of today. Korea, Germany, Japan, Israel, USA and China have fared better than India in the fields of robotics if you look at the parameter 'robot density' to gauge. Let us not right off Indians so easily.  We know how to compete and survive. Yes agreed, we need to reform ourselves but judging us is too early.
Let us wait for the next decade to see how far we have gone.  The real bothering question is should India really re look at its business model which is known for IT services. We have proved that we are good at product delivery as well. The field which needs more extensive expansion is in research on these new fields. Hope to see the new business model evolve at the earliest.
