Kannad gothilla - Love for language
Ah, what a great morning to wake up to when you read an article in the newspaper that touches your heart. Yes its 29th May today and the paper is TOI with article being "No more 'Kannad gothilla',...". Its just too good to see outsiders in Karnataka starting to learn Kannada, our language. In the midst of decline of few of the languages, I appreciate and grateful for those who started learning.
A reuter blog talks about a survey from People's Linguistic Survey of India where more than 220 languages are lost in just 50 years and another 150 is due in next 50. Is it got to do with the diminishing capabilities of reading, writing or rather the love for languages? Well, if you read the reuter blog its all those and nomadic culture to a great extent. The decline of language is mostly seen in the coastal areas and in the nomadic people group. Added to that if your next generation aren't as interested in learning your ancestral language, then not just decline, we see the death of the languages.
Its obvious that you don't need verbal languages to communicate, which accounts for 93% in your entire process, but verbal languages are on the decline for sure. What can we do? Its part of the evolution and Human Being's capabilities are diminishing over a period. Its not the language alone.
By the way, coming back to my original article 'Kannad gothilla', here are few things that I have observed :
a) First its 'Kannada' and not 'Kannad'.
b) Don't just learn the language so you can speak to your maid, vegetable vendor or to shop. Be passionate about it.
c) Another compelling reasons non-kannadigas have started learning our language is that they can teach their kids 'Kannada' when they are enrolled here.
d) Karnataka has other languages too that we are proud of...like Tulu, Konkani and Kodava, thou its mostly our coastal people speaking it.
Finally thank you for started learning our language, but do learn it properly so you don't embrass us. Grateful to see the love of the languages.
P.S. - Thank you Reuter blog 'India speaks 780 languages, 220 lost in last 50 years – survey' for giving me some useful insights.
