Polite and softness - a mistaken identity.

Quite often we see people being polite in asking others. 'Can you please hand over that paper to me?' Adding a please in your request would may hell lot of difference along with the tone you use to convey the same. Isn't it more apt to use it when required? Most of us in India at least perceive this politeness as rather softness.  To me that is clearly a mistaken identity between the two identical twins. You need not be soft by character to be polite.  It is just a more formal way to be polite. So why this wrong perception? Is it due to our brought up? Is it due to the way you think the world should be? Or rather is it just being odd man out?
In a country where diversity and tolerance are its pillars on which it is based on, we are so unfortunate that we see things in our own perspective rather than have a open mind. Obviously not everyone is intolerant and closed. But why is it that I see it more often these days.
Let us look around from another side. If not being polite, you should be rude to others or don't be impolite at all (grey area). Now my argument is what does it take to add the politeness. After all does it cost anything? The opportunity cost for not being polite may be high as per my perception. It could involve losing your relationship, the negotiation, the argument and in fact the deal at times. Why incur such a loss? Well looks like am talking from an economical point of view in being polite.
Are you worried that your politeness is perceived to be fake?   He he...be yourself.
