Popularity - would it really define your future income online?
About couple of months back when I was going to a temple with my family through a nearby village, I happened to see some young folks hardly around 20 years of age with camera. At some distance there was another group with their mobile phones hanging and a young fellow capturing a video of his friends dancing. What stuck me is the craze these young generation are showing to make videos for online platforms.
Let us deep dive a bit. Are these folks here for money or popularity or both? What is driving them to become short video makers which are hardly a minute or two? Of course, its the money and then the idea that they can become popular quiet fast and easily. But isn't it a misnomer. Don't you think this path is quiet misleading.
What is even more depressing is to think that every body can monetize money thru online platforms like Tiktok, Instagram or YouTube. Yes few of them succeed, but its very handful of them. Few ways you can make money thru Tiktok or Instagram is either thru sponsorship or thru brand yourself and sell yourself outside such platforms. Then why this craze. Isn't it heartbreaking to see everyone after this and falling into the trap.
Let us imagine you take a day's time to make at least 1 video with good content. For this video to reach a 1000 views, it may take a month or even a year for a beginner. What will these youngsters do till then?
Yes agreed that in today's fast paced world, short messaged photos or short videos are making the headlines. If you are reading this whole blog, then I may consider myself lucky. I can only imagine the days when human beings even stop reading a page. As I see even the learning these days are happening thru videos.
Where does these things lead to for Human beings? Answer is 'Short span of focus' or 'Attention span'.
Attention span of Human beings are drastically reducing. A survey from Microsoft showed human attention span was 8 seconds in 2018 while it was 12 seconds in 2000. A Goldfish has an attention span of 9 seconds for god sake. Where does this lead to? Impatience, isn't it? Worse is that we will probably evolve with no brains in couple of centuries.
We need to re look at what is driving us to success these days. Clearly I see we are being misled by the short term success and easy gains. Hope we learn quickly and evolve as a better species, after all we consider ourselves as the most intelligent ones (or is it?).
