Avarekalu Usli - a traditional mouthwatering dish

Image
It is december and what better for us Kannadigas than to savor the taste of the avarekalu usli. It is our pride dish and is best enjoyed with the akki roti. When prepared in the traditional way at home with the right amount of butter, it is just finger licking good. If you are interested to know the recipe and how to prepare it, here is the avarekalu usli video for you.       It is my pride to introduce you to this homely dish that we Kannadigas just love. For those of you who are wondering what it looks like, here is one image: Courtesy - Internet          I am sure the foodies in Karnataka love this very much. Not to mention it is a common house dish prepared across Karnataka especially during December & January of every year. The avarekayi or the seed is usually available at this time of the year.          It takes me back to my childhood memories of this dish being prepared wit...

'Be U' - Bengaluru Logo

Image
What is the significance of a logo?         Does a city need a logo?         Is it just to create a brand name?         Whom are we competing with?         I am sure you would have a number of other questions. The answer is simple. It is a marketing strategy. As any company would like to create a brand for itself, what is wrong in creating a brand for our city. Bengaluru has taken the first step towards this. Not that Bengaluru needed to emphasize its brand thru a logo. To me Bengaluru had created a brand for itself.  Needless to say the logo just added more value to its brand name. For those of you who are yet to see the logo, here it is Photo Courtesy  https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/be-you-namma-bengaluru-gets-its-own-logo-reflective-its-open-culture-73665 The creators of this logo - Rushi Patel and M VenkateswaraRao has ensured that the design ...

Less drama, more fun!

I love movies as you might already know. By the way I have a vivid taste of liking crime thrillers which gives me goose pumps. I am not too much in to drama either on the screen or off it. My preference has been to keep less drama in life which makes it more fun. Wouldn't it be so simple to experience less of drama in everything? Keep life simple.        Patience, tolerance can guide us thru the tough times in life. I have found a better way to see thru it lately. Thanks to meditation course that I took up and that way is 'Silence'. It just builds the resilience to get past your unnecessary drama in life.       It is for you to decide who you want to keep in your life and whom to remove. Lean principles talk about eliminate waste to make the process more efficient. I wish there is a simpler way to apply this to our life. I recently saw a short video/talk on Linkedin on how to improve your life. A simple checklist with list...

Western template on India?

As you all know, since 1991 we are trying to mimic what the western culture is all about. Yes there are few advantages we have seen like the time taken to withdraw money from Banks or how every item in life is getting converged to an app on a mobile. I do appreciate the good things that we have seen in the past two and a half decades. We got to see the mall culture for better. But have we progressed? That is something to ponder over.       A country that was once so rich in culture around 800 years back, now is struggling to keep up its own culture. Does it mean we have progressed? In olden days, there was more respect for elders, teachers, parents than what we see today. Values were preferred over money.  Ethically isn't that a better option to have more values than money. Yes money can't buy everything, definitely not happiness, honesty, loyalty. The question that is bothering me is have we comprised our quality (value system) for the sake of...

The fourth idly!

Here is a story I read long time back and I keep repeating it to my wife as 'The fourth idly'.     Two friends met over a breakfast. One of them is very hungry and orders 2 idlies. He hogs it but that does not fulfill his stomach. So he orders couple of more delicious idlies. He finds that he is full after the fourth idly. Suddenly he thinks what if I had the fourth idly first. Wouldn't that one (the fourth one) idly filled my stomach? You might call it as naive but a beautiful message is hidden in this story.  Those first three idlies that he ate are the foundation which made him full once he completes the fourth one.       Bottom line of this story is we need to go thru the process rather than just the end result. It has occurred to me that couldn't I have had done this degree or certification earlier in my life, wouldn't that have made me successful or better prepared? Looks to me that the dots I am trying to connect had not reached to the...

My rapping...

My first try on rapping...enjoy it. "Just dance but not to flaunt Just fancy your chance to haunt Just be happy for your stunt Just enjoy the jaunt  Just make every move count Just live the life you want without a taunt" Wonder what got me today? I just rapped. Actually am surprised at my creativity.

Playing with clay

As November 5th, was our 3rd wedding anniversary, me and my wife went to Innovative Film City to celebrate. We enjoyed the whole day in the film city which is in Bidadi around 20 kilometers from Bangalore. Out of all the attractions (wax museum, aqua world, dinosaur world, go-karting, cricket zone, big boss house tour, kabali walkthru, bouncing...) that we enjoyed, one which stood out for me was Pottery making workshop.         I always wanted to make my hands dirty by playing with clay. It was my first experience with trying to make something using the clay mud. Believe me it was awesome 15 minutes that I completely lost myself enjoying how to make the vase.  I owe it to my pottery guru Venkatesh who helped me make it. He said he is from a village near to Bidadi and has been doing it since his childhood in his village. His simplicity in explanation gave me the taste of what it takes to make your hands dirty with ease.   ...

Ultimate competition!

Image
My recent fascination has been reading quotes from Buddha. Give it a try. You will definitely benefit from it. It just gives me the positive energy to start my day.  Here is one of my favourite quote. Courtesy - Internet         For all those management students, isn't this what Maslow conveyed in his hierarchy of needs theory? This probably stands at the top of what his hierarchy says - Self Actualization. In short what he intended to say is when a man's basic needs (physiological & safety needs) are satisfied, he would look at higher purpose in life. What better than trying to prove himself, that he can reach his full potential? Isn't the ultimate competition for a man is himself? Think over it.         Now let me get back to Buddha's saying "Prove yourself to yourself, not others". If you can make the external competition irrelevant in your life, believe me you have reached heights. All the co...

Boomerang!

Karma is so often linked to boomerang at play. It is believed that both have one thing in common. What you throw, comes back to you. A simple funda yet is probably the essence of  our existence. Our actions, deeds are all supposed to come back....does it make sense to keep it good? If at all if everyone knows this, then I wonder why such pain and agony exists in this world.          I was watching a YouTube video today morning on the laws of karma. One law which really stuck me is "when you believe something to be true, at some point of time life puts you into a situation to prove what you believed". Isn't every moment of your life being manifested either by your own thoughts or deeds?  Well it could possibly be your manifestation or someone close to you who has prayed for you. Let us pray that others have good intentions while manifesting on your behalf.           On my sincere quest...

Today's irony

Image
Pic courtesy - Internet      Yes indeed, this picture conveys more meaning than you could ever imagine. Inequality among the society is one such message that is being conveyed.      The real question is what are you as a human going to do about this. Thinking as an economists, you may argue that inequality in the society is what drives the economy. But wouldn't you agree with me that this inequality has gone beyond the limits.        Imagine a world where the most developed country would help the least one like Zimbabwe, Burundi to come out of poverty. Wouldn't the world be a better place to live? Financial aid is the last thing in my mind. I am talking about helping the country's progress in all aspects through collaborative governments in areas of industrial production, employment, education, healthcare. It is normal to think what would the developed country gain out of this? How about some ...

Colorful vibrant day!

Good morning or good day. A wish that you usually hear the first thing in the morning. A simple smile, a greeting that makes it more beautiful is what we crave to make our day better. Even better if it is followed up with a positive affirmative thoughts. What about a hot coffee? For those caffeine addicts it would be a dream come true to hold the morning newspaper with an aromatic coffee in their hand.         A jog or a walk early in the morning is just life breather. Cool breeze falling on your face, enlightening your mood will be a perfect bliss. How about some music to aid your exercise regime? Wouldn't it be icing on the cake? Isn't it the perfect way to start your day?         A good bath followed with some meditation to give it a perfect finish to the early morning start. So wonderful and yet so elegant way to make you day perfect. Life is so simple when we start enjoying the beauty of the nature and its...

Observation...secret to Wisdom!

I am an ordinary person. Believe me, I don't have any regrets in being ordinary. Life too is made of many ordinary moments and we are given a gift to make it extra ordinary. All that we need to do to make it 'extra' is to enrich our mind. No am not referring to the materialistic things that you can possess or can buy to make it better but rather your inner gifts like wisdom, intellect, patience, happiness. In fact the whole world can turn upside down if you can build yourself.        Last sunday was my third wedding anniversary, me and my wife went to Innovative Film City that is in Bidadi around 15 kilometers from my home to celebrate. We enjoyed the whole day there. One particular thing that made me stand out was the Aqua Kingdom, an artificial beach laid out for fun. Thou not much fond of water, both of us enjoyed the walk on the beach side and the music. After walking in the water (near the shore) for sometime, we settled to our recliner. I...

Enjoy the moment!!

Focus, calm and clarity - aren't these so simple words to say. Well coming to practice they mean a lot for everybody. Wouldn't it have been easy if we could just wire up our brain to get these whenever we can? Does it sound like am talking about the matrix movie scene where Keanu Reeves learns the Kung fu thru simulator? If only learning new things could have been so simple. That day is not far with AI booming.           Let me come back to the topic at hand. If you can deal with the present scenario thoroughly, then you have achieved everything in this world. What does it take to just keep you mind, body still and concentrate on the current task at hand? 'A life time of practice' for sure. Meditation it is said that makes you more mindful and calm. It definitely gives you the clarity and a purpose to the life.           I happen to download an interesting mobile app called 'Curiosity'...as the same ...

My choice!

I am feeling good today. In fact with what ever I have today am feeling great. Thank God for all that you have given me. I am happy with what I have and feel good with the grace the God has gifted me. Life is not only about what people think it ought to be. If you are contented with what you have then life is bliss.        One person's happiness need not be another. Would you agree to this?  Just because someone thinks you don't have something in life, doesn't make you any less happier.       I am thankful to the Universe for all that I have today.       I am grateful for the peace, happiness and contentment that God has given me today.     Wish all of you have a good day and a great year ahead!  Hope you make your choices better.

Shhh....power of silence!!

'Om', probably the only word in the spiritual world that does not have a religion tagged to it. Some may argue that it is part of the Hindu custom, but I beg to differ. It might have originated from Hinduism but a sound that does not have a religion or caste attached to it. Well that is my view.        I recently got a message in whats app from my friend and believe me, I have not seen such a wonderful message till date. Here it is:      ~ In spite of so much to eat - Fasting is considered healthy      ~ In spite of so much to travel & explore - Meditating is considered superior      ~ In spite of so much to see - Closing your eyes and looking within is considered eternal      ~ In spite of so many voices, words & sounds - Silence is considered ultimate  and the list goes on.  A simple message and yet so powerful it is. All the answers lies within ourselves...

A hallucination called 'Losing'

Have you lost your mind? Isn't this something you commonly hear? What is it that we are afraid of? Is it to lose something or the fear of the world criticizing us for being dumb or stupid? The questions are plenty for sure. The answer lies in you and your mindset.          Spiritually speaking there is nothing to lose, don't you think. Every failure is a learning experience, after all we are all born to learn and re-learn until our karma liberates us from being reborn again.          I believe the whole mankind has misunderstood the purpose of our existence. Isn't that the reason why all this sufferings? To me the true purpose of a human being is to do better karma than your previous life until you achieve nirvana. Ha ha...that was easier said than done. Well no harm in at least trying it out, what do you think?          Being positive in this life, you would agree that even ...

Peaceful Warrior - A true eye opener for me!

A movie that has really moved me and educates me every time I watch it is 'Peaceful Warrior'. It has a decent script and acted wonderfully. I loved the movie for its simple teachings it gave me. Every human being has a purpose to our birth, wouldn't it be so good to find our what it is? Here are few things I learnt from the movie: a) "Empty your trash"                 Mind is the dustbin here...removing the unwanted thoughts and retaining what is relevant is the only way to lead the life blissfully. Doesn't it help us to achieve more by being in the present moment? After all this is what the yogis, sanyasi are preaching us over the years.        Being present and devoted to the moment 100% is bliss. b) Life's 3 rules        Paradox - Life is a mystery...don't waste time trying to figure it out.        Humor  - Keep your sense of humor especially about yourself....

Bliss !!!

Image
Last sunday started off as usual for me, that is when my wife reminded me that we need to paint the deepa (earthen lamps) that we bought. It was totally her idea to buy these and paint them with the colors that we got from itsy-bitsy.  What a wonderful idea it turned out to be!      She started off painting few of them and that is when I joined her. I just loved the final touch I could give those. It is a sheer bliss when we play with colors. Imagine you get to make your own color combination with the few that you have. Isn't is so beautiful that painting can sooth your nerves, make you more calm? I can feel the calmness to the core. Even better when you have a couple of hands and heads to give you the ideas.        Don't they look great?   Here is the snap of our creation.     Let the light of lamp glow forever in your life and make your life bliss. Happy Deepavali to all of you !!!!! ...

All in!

Yes you read it right...poker is where you hear 'I am going All in'. Wonder what it takes to put everything you have at stake and just jump in. After all its just a game, isn't it? What if it's your life, instead of a game? Would you have the same guts to play the hand? Well it speaks of your courage. Don't risk it, if you are not so sure. Again it is not for everyone to play safe. What is a greater loss than life itself? If you are playing for your life or your health, you may have to think twice, don't you think.      It gives me goose bumps to see the poker players betting everything they have. So well planned move, yet hoping that the opponent would fall for you. That is the thrill in a game.  Adrenaline rushing, blood boiling, heart pumping - who wouldn't want such a thrill?          Feeling the calmness at the table, the waitress whispering for a drink, cards hustling...waiting for you to make that move. Life hap...

Being true to the nature!

Life is too short to indulge in everyday crap that we see, hear and sense. Ah, wouldn't it be better to live like animals, just think about it, all that you care is the day's food. Imagine you had the power to transform yourself from a human to any animal or a bird for a couple of years. Which one would you choose? :)       Healing power lies with the nature. Time is one such factor. Your sorrows, miseries don't last long. Even better when you just push the technological devices (laptop, phones, kindle or whatever) aside and just be with the nature. Of course, I meant being with yourself.  Silence your mind and listen to those birds singing, leaves falling off the trees, water flowing thru the stream. Haven't you felt the perfect harmony?       Imagination takes me to run around the jungle like a Tarzan or maybe play a game in Jumanji. Would you accompany me?  My trek to Mullanagiri (Chikmalagur) was a life changing experie...

Live by rules!

Imagine you are about to cross that stage of life when everything is about to change. What if you don't care about the profession you work on, where you live, what you eat, who you care? Its finally about you. You only. Isn't that what you always wanted? Then why the set of rules to follow. No am not a teenager who is entering to his adolescence if that is what you are thinking.             Even as an adult you just have so much rules to comply by - get up at a particular time, go to work that you may not enjoy, attend the party that you no longer belong. At times you might feel that being all alone in some forest is the best way to enjoy the life. Who cares about the rules? Don't you agree.            Life isn't about these rules that you have imposed on yourself. Its much more than that. Freedom in every walk of life is what you would be thinking. How to get such a free life? Are w...

Enjoy travelling!!!

Image
I was going thru my Pinterest photos and came across a nice thought provoking quote on travel, which made me write this blog.  The quote was about the reasons why you should travel. Don't ask me if you really need a reason to travel. Well, that is what drove me to that quote. I always have traveled for fun, if not for anything else. At times my travel has also included visiting the religious places for some pooja.                                Photo Courtsey - http://www.migratingmiss.com/but-really-why-do-you-travel/              There is a saying in my native language (Kannada) "Desha nodu, kosha oodu", which goes to say to gain knowledge you have two paths - one by travelling and other by reading. I was brought up listening to this famous saying, so I always thought I can learn something from travelling. C...

Zodiac

What comes to your mind when you hear the word 'Zodiac'? Is it the astrological symbols or the famous hollywood crime thriller? Irrespective of what you might have thought it is, I always found this word fascinating. The word by itself builds a different kind of curiosity in the mind. This blog is purely to tap that strange feeling which arose when you hear or repeat words similar to Zodiac.        Astrological Zodiac signs are 12 of them which y ou already know - Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. These are considered as they belong to one of the 4 elements - Earth, Water, Fire and Air. Interestingly the signs belonging to these elements have their generic characteristics embedded in them. It is one think about believing in these signs and what they have to say about your future and the other interesting think is to let the stars do its duty while you t...

Photo Courtesy - https://treeyopermacultureedu.wordpress.com/chapter-2-3-or-the-11-design-principles-from-the-intro-book/attitudinal-principles/         Nature has its own way of handling things...it certainly does not need human intervention, to the extent that we tamper the ecological system. Don't you agree? We humans think we want to use our so called expertise in Science, Bio technology, AI to tap into every corner of what God's gift is.         Yes I am referring to today's news - Mustard is set to become the first Genetically Modified food  and Indian government is on the verge of approving this. To me this is a disaster in the making, asking for trouble from the mother nature as you are tampering the ecological system. Let me substantiate this...these Genetically Modified (GM for short) foods are pests/insects resistance. I might keep the bad pests away but what about those bees which help...

A company man - Korean movie review

I love movies...Korean movies are something that I have been loving it more recently. My favorities being action oriented thrillers and a drama. I got to see all of them in one movie....it is called ' A Company Man '. It being a Korean movie was icing on the cake.     The best part of this movie is the contrast that is shown between job and love. Do you love you job if it has two sides to it? One side is to show the world that you are a simple metal trading company and on the other side is the deadly assassinations that are carried out. Look at the camouflage at the company level. Even better is the main character's dilemma that is shown who is initially torn between his murderous job and love for his singing.       The way the movie goes on is show beautifully with how the main character wants to save the 20 year old kid and his family. To what extent he goes on to try and save them. Interestingly the film is woven between the conflicts that ar...

Evolution of the Service industry...in the making

I just got an   email   which just astonished me...we all know about Raymond Suiting’s. If you have not, it is one of the most popular fabric manufacture, suit makers and fashion designer in India since 1925. Well, the email was about Raymond suiting’s which has been popular in India since 1930s has brought tailoring services to your doorstep. I still remember the good old days of my father and grandfather when Raymond used to be the preferred Suiting’s and Shirting’s maker for any big occasions. Be it a marriage or house warming ceremony, Raymond was the first thought which used to strike in our minds. Even today I would still consider it among the top brands for stitched suits. No wonder it was ranked 23rd most trusted brand of India in 2014. What really shocks me was the step that big brands like Raymond are taking to move towards the Customer satisfaction? Yes they want to bring the service to the doorstep of the customer to save his time, energy and this bold step i...

Be yourself!!!

A story which I just read on linkedin post and I loved it.           A student is writing an exam and his friend sitting at his back seat is copying the answers exactly the same as it is. Only thing the friend does not know is he has a different question paper and he is writing answers to wrong questions. When results came in the friend got 0 out of 100 with an 'F' written in red by his teacher.         Life does not give same questions to everyone. Copying does not help anyone...it just lowers the creativity in you. It is better to live the life you want even if you fail.        Be yourself irrespective of the situation.   Some beautiful quotes on 'Be Yourself!' ~ Be yourself. Every one else is taken                  Oscar Wilde ~ To be yourself in the world that is constantly trying to make you someone else is the greatest accomplishment ...

Art of applying the knowledge!!!

Knowledge is good, but wisdom is better - the saying goes. Wisdom helps you to apply the knowledge and bring it to action at the right time, at the right place.  You might have heard of DIKW pyramid (Data Information Knowledge Wisdom)...Data is the raw form be it a fact, signal or a symbol, Information its processed form, Knowledge is usually the processed information or that information that helps you to apply. Wisdom is the ultimatum of these and you are to apply the right knowledge at the right place and at the right time.       In relation to this application of knowledge, I find economics and analytics fascinating. We all know economics is about the science of understanding consumer and his satisfaction for the value he gets and the price he pays (am referring to microeconomics obviously) . Isn't it interesting for companies to apply more of economics? I wonder how many companies do hire economists for research?       Let me ...

Ads sell!!!

I have always been fascinated with advertising...especially the ones that are humorous, creative ones which touches my heart. Yeah in India, sentiments & emotions matter. Isn't that an easy way to conquer the Indian hearts easily and increase your market share? Imagine the perfect ad being cooked up with the exact dose of sensuality in it. How about a topping of humor and a pinch of creativity to make it a perfect recipe that you can savor? Isn't your dish a great one to serve now?     One common myth has been to loop in celebrities as the main actors in the ads. It does has its own advantage with the usual fan base enjoying to watch their celebs acting on the screen. But how much does it really add value? Does the content matter or the actors in the ad? I would go with content. I believe the last option and an easiest one for a marketer is to involve the celebs. Virat Kohli, Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Amitabh Bachan, MS Dhoni are few popular celebs a...

International dilemma!!

To globalize or to be more protective is the dilemma that most Governments have in today's world. It surely is visible by the latest immigration rules laid out by Donald Trump, the US president. The latest to follow the trend has been Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull. In the recent past, Brexit is another example for this. Certainly this is not leading to the one globalised world that economists fancy.     That leaves me with the question - why are these governments from developed nations showing protectionism over globalisation? In my view two things matter for these Governments - their culture and future growth, apart from the short term goal of showcasing good job growth internally. Obvious reason is they respect their nation and want to maintain certain quality in their standard of living and perceive that immigrants can cause real threat to their culture. The other possible reason is to attract the best of the brains (read talents) from across the world and n...

Movies as an educator!!!

I love movies...any language would do for that matter. That's true...any language as long as it has a good message. I have been fascinated by Korean movies and Chinese movies lately. Hollywood movies are supposed to the sweet dish in your plate. Bollywood has the masala to make your plate spicy. I have heard Nigerian movies are good too, honestly never tried one.    I started watching Hollywood movies to learn how to speak American accent of English. Later learnt how to speak British English too. Imagine movies taught me how to speak....not bad right. Truly speaking I started it only to learn the accent of English but it has taught me more than just the accent.    With the circle of friends I had who all loved to watch movies, I learnt the culture of America, England....some of China, South Korea too. Crime thrillers being my favourite genre, I would love to watch the sports drama for inspiration any day.    James bond movies are a fascinat...

Life's highest purpose - Immortality or Reproduction

I have always been fascinated with the concept of higher purpose of Human existence. Is it to Immortality or Reproduction? As shown in the movie which I love ' Lucy ', we humans merely exists today. Even our ancestors (Indians, Egyptians, Romans) had discovered more purpose to Human life than what we see today.       Charles Darwin who was once called fool for his 'Theory of Evolution' has probably given more to us than you can even think of. Humans are still evolving making us one of the most primitive existence in this world. We take pleasure in the money we earn, knowledge we gain, love we give & take......such an immaturity to understand that time is the true valued possession we have. Hmmm....interesting to say am still trying to gain more time here. As we consider the true value that Human beings are passing on over the time are the knowledge and the learnings. Is it?      Indian scriptures have more answer to this limitati...

My first video presentation!!!

Ethical dilemma in Judicial system!

Justice. Do you quantify the settlement of a justice in terms of money or as an apology from the culprit for the loss he has made to the victim? To add to this, imagine if the victim's loss is his health or even worse the life of someone in his family. Can you replace the loss of a life lost with money? Companies are here to make money or profits understood. The real question is at what cost - environment surrounding you is being polluted. Is that the gift we are giving our next generation?Would you be happy to settle for some money if the polluted water causes death in your family?       The 1998 hollywood movie 'A Civil Action' is based on all these ethical issues. Be it environmental issues or ethical dilemma in the workplace or for that matter the change needed in the judicial system. After all does money compensate for all your loss? Isn't there any higher cause than the money?  It leads to numerous questions and probably even more challen...

Strategy at play

Organizations set vision, mission or objectives that they want to achieve...be it in a time span of 5 years or 10 years or a long lasting goal. This vision, mission or objective is what I would like to call it as first pillar of the foundation for building an organisation.      The second pillar is the resources (be it human, financial, technology or process) that are applied in order to achieve the vision or objective. Business Managers apply their expertise here to drill down the business goals the company wants to achieve into the realistic goals for technical folks to understand. Project managers aid this activity to allot the budget and the required resources like number of people in the team along with deciding on the technologies to be used. Process or methodologies come in later to show how the technology will be implemented to achieve the desired result.         Value, Ethics and Standards being set at the organisation l...

Perception of India across the world - the past and the present

I just watched a video on youtube -  Foreign Media on INDIA : Britain is rich because of INDIA . The discussion starts with the Shashi Tharoor's viral speech at oxford where he has been very vocal about Britain owing reparations to India. Let me ask you "Do you want today's Britishers to pay for what their ancestors did?". Aren't we self sufficient to stand up on our feet, forgetting the past? With that said, a sincere apology from the Britain would have solved the issue....again that is my opinion.         Imagine India, if neither the Moghuls nor the British had invaded our country. I just can't believe the cultural richness we would have still enjoyed. I might be a little short-sighted by restricting my view to only cultural side, on a broader aspect what about our education system, our intellectual abilities, our economic supreme to name a few.
